Ban sounds death knell for solariums

SWAN Hill residents have mixed views on a state-wide ban on commercial solariums which came into effect on January 1.

The ban was passed through parliament two years ago after solariums, which relay UV rays to bare skin to build up a natural tan within minutes, were deemed unsafe due to the number of cancer-related deaths.

Swan Hill resident Danni Caruso recently moved to Melbourne and enjoyed using the service.

“I am disappointed, the one I used closed on the 1st,” she said.

“I know it’s not good for you, but neither is smoking or drugs, which people are more addicted to.”

Ms Caruso said the ban wouldn’t stop her from going out in the sun to get a natural tan.

Swan Hill Smooth and Soothe Beauty Salon owner Lauren Faliszewski said she personally loved the beds.

She didn’t offer the service at her salon, however worked at a solarium bar in Melbourne for a few months.

Suffering from chronic fatigue, she said the beds provided some help with her condition.

“It’s not always about tanning and appearances. I found it great with skin conditions like psoriasis and eczema,” she said.

“They are fantastic if used in the correct way and not abused.”
