Cut the carp to raise trek funds

A FUNDRAISING drive set to cover four states in seven days will begin with a fishing competition at Lake Benanee for one team hailing from Robinvale.

The Flying Doctor Outback Car Trek will leave from Mildura on May 31, heading across the dustiest dirt tracks eastern Australia has to offer before arriving in Byron Bay on June 6.

Robinvale’s Peter O’Brien and Brian Englefield, along with Mr O’Brien’s daughter Hayley, from Perth, will be among the convoy in a 1968 Ford Fairlane ambulance.

To raise funds for the trip, the group will stage a carp fishing competition at Lake Benanee on January 25.

Along with the environmental benefits of decreasing numbers of the destructive marine pest, 100 per cent of the $4 entry fee and money raised in a raffle to be drawn on the day will go to the Royal Flying Doctors Service.

With hopes to raise in excess of $7500, Mr O’Brien said the day would be a great family day out, with plenty of prizes on offer for young anglers.

“There is plenty of carp in the lake – we made sure,” Mr O’Brien said.

“There is also a sandy beach and toilet facilities, and the lake just isn’t used enough.”
