Heat warning

IF YOU have been wondering when the scorching summer heat was going to rear its head once again, the wait is over.

Unseasonable mild weather over the past few weeks has come to an end, with temperatures expected to waiver around 40 degrees for the rest of the week.

The sudden spike in temperatures has prompted warnings from local emergency authorities and health organisations.

Swan Hill Country Fire Authority captain Nipper Turner said the Mallee had been “pretty lucky so far” and the weather had not played any part in igniting fires this year.

Of the fires the brigade has headed out to, most have been deemed accidental, with a fire at Beverford last week caused by a failed pump, and major bushfire events — like those seen at Wyperfeld National Park and Yaapeet early last year — absent for now.

“I reckon summer hasn’t got here yet — it think it’s coming and I reckon it is going to be hot,” Mr Turner said.
