Country roads lose out to city

RURAL road users may soon have to ensure they travel with a cushion to sit on.

Premier Daniel Andrews has slashed $160 million from the Country Roads and Bridges Program. He has also pulled funds from other rural road maintenance projects in order to fund the removal of level crossings across Melbourne. 

The move has come as a “disappointment” to Member for Murray Plains Peter Walsh.

Mr Walsh said that the program was designed to help rural councils meet their requirements for funding upgrades to local roads. 

For example, the sealing of the Benjeroop-Tresco Road was made possible for the Gannawarra shire because of the funding they received from the program. 

Mr Walsh said that without the extra funding councils will now have to find the funds to fill the gap left by the program.
