Eisteddfod future doubt

THE future of the long-running Swan Hill Eisteddfod remains uncertain, with senior volunteer positions yet to be filled.

A campaign to fill the coordinator, dance coordinator and secretarial roles with the eisteddfod is ongoing, after three long-standing volunteers announced their intention to step down after this years event.

This year will be the final eisteddfod for event and music coordinator Sue Turner, dance coordinator Barb Uebergang, and secretary and treasurer Robyn Fry after a combined service spanning more than 40 years.

A call for volunteers a fortnight ago has not managed to fill the roles so far.

Ms Uebergang said it would be “heart-breaking” to see the well-entered event fold.

She said anyone taking on one of the three key roles they were looking to fill would be well supported by a “wonderful team of volunteers”.

“It is these three positions we are looking to fill — or it will be Swan Hill’s last eisteddfod if we can’t fill them,” she said.

“[To be the dance coordinator] you do not need to have danced yourself, but just have some knowledge of it.

“It would be an advantage to have danced before or had a child involved in dance — mainly because of the programming.

“You need to understand how much time is needed to change, like if [a performer] is doing a classical dance, they might need more time to put on their point shoes or change their hair and then they might need more time if they go into a jazz performance, which is totally different.”

Likewise, for the music coordinator a knowledge of music and instruments would be advantageous.
