NEXT Wednesday’s edition of The Guardian will look a little older than usual.
Five decades older to be exact.
To commemorate 50 years since Swan Hill was proclaimed a city, The Guardian is reprinting the original newspaper as distributed on March 12, 1965.
Back then The Guardian cost six pence, phone numbers were four digits long and the latest Sophia Loren movie was showing at the drive-in.
But expect to see some familiar names too, with retailers such as Northern Shoe Store and Kennedy’s Jewellers still going strong.
And it’s all thanks to former Guardian editor Lawrie French.
It was his idea to reprint the paper in memory of the special occasion in Swan Hill’s history.
“It’s worth pondering the past 50 years,” he said.
Back in 1965 Swan Hill was not yet the tourist destination it is today.
