SOME of Australia’s most notable astronomers will gather at Lake Tyrrell next weekend to take advantage of the clear night skies over Sea Lake.
The Lake Tyrrell Star Party promises to be an educational weekend full of all things astronomy.
The star party has its origins back in 1847, when the area was first settled by Europeans.
An English settler called William Edward Stanbridge was impressed by the local indigenous community’s knowledge of Lake Tyrrell’s astronomy.
The Boorong clan shared their dreamtime stories with Stanbridge and he charted the stars and constellations they corresponded to.
The third Lake Tyrrell Star Party kicks off at the Sea Lake Community Centre at 7.30pm on Friday, March 20.
The celebrations continue from 10.30am the next day with four guest speakers giving lectures.
The main event, a guided stargazing tour, commences at 8pm on Saturday, March 21 at the viewing platform on Bailey’s Rd.
Lake Tyrrell is a unique salt lake located seven kilometres north of Sea Lake and about one hour west of Swan Hill.
