Backyard blitz for local in need

THE Swan Hill community has come together to support a local woman fighting for her life by performing their own little backyard blitz.

A Swan Hill woman, known only as Helen, has gone to Melbourne for cancer treatment, but will receive a welcome surprise when she finds out her backyard has gotten a massive makeover while she’s been away.

Overall, 36 local companies were involved in the domestic blitz, but the idea for the renovation came about when the lady’s neighbour, Kylie Shepherd, thought about ways she could help her friend.

“I felt that Helen had been dealt enough bad hands in life,” she said.

“She had always said that she would like to have a back deck. So I had a thought — I wonder if we could backyard-blitz someone in need of something special in Swan Hill?”

While Helen was still away in Melbourne, Mrs Shepherd said “our amazing town — businesses, friends and families — all rallied together” for her.

“Every business I approached contributed without question,” she said.
