Rural health is the way to go

ASK Meher Saini, Laura Nield and Jiwanjot Kaur about studying in Melbourne and you’ll be met by a diplomatic “umm”.

“I like Melbourne, but in small doses,” Jiwanjot said.

“I wouldn’t live there forever.”

Laura can’t see herself settling in the state capital either.

“I find country life 10 times more relaxing,” she said.

The three Monash University medical students are all country girls at heart — Meher is from Hamilton, New Zealand; Laura from Balranald; and Jiwanjot from Shepparton.

Typically, medical students in Victoria are required to undertake one rotation in the country and five in a metropolitan location.

Extended Rural Cohort students like Meher, Laura and Jiwanjot however, undertake five rotations in a rural location and only one in the city.

The trio are currently placed at Swan Hill Medical Group for four months.
