Canoers conquer the mighty Murray

AN adventurous Canadian couple is 36 days into an ambitious trip down the Murray River.

Nadia Pozzebon and Jeff Quesnel are hoping to canoe all the way to where the Murray River meets the Southern Ocean.

Nadia says that their river adventure was a “last minute decision”.

After arriving in Australia at the start of the year the pair wanted to get off the beaten tourist track.

“Jeff heard that the Murray was the third longest navigable river in the world,” she said.

The outdoorsy Ontarians thought it would be a way to see another side of Australia, so they sourced a second hand canoe in Albury and set off from Hovell Tree on February 24.

With a spot tracker the only way for friends and family back in Canada to stay abreast of their location, the pair are travelling extremely lightly.

“We wake up, pack up the canoe, our wee little tent and a few belongings,” Nadia said.

“We have breakfast and lunch on the river to keep up time. Then we find a nice camp spot, relax and write in our journals,” she said.

The pair have been disappointed at the amount of rubbish left at some campsites; mostly fishing line, beer bottles and old tent supplies.

For the nature lovers its been an eye-opener, particularly when having to rescue animals that have been caught in the garbage.

But the Australian flora and fauna has helped make up for it.

The couple are unsure if they’ll be able to make it all the way to the mouth of the Murray in one go, but they’re enjoying every day as it comes.

“This is part one of our trip,” Nadia said.

“We’re probably going to stop in Mildura then do part two.”
