New homes for puppies dumped in shopping bag

THE last few days have seen a huge turn-around for two puppies found dumped near the Murray Valley Highway at Swan Hill late last week.

The young animals were the unexpected find of Ultima’s Leonard MacIntosh on Thursday morning.

Mr MacIntosh was making a quick stop at the toilets near the Swan Hill Racecourse just off the highway when he heard yapping.

On closer inspection, he found an Aldi cooler bag zipped up near a tree with two hungry pups, a brown female, and black and white male, clambering around inside.

“One of them had a funny front leg and they were zipped up in an Aldi bag, so they had obviously been dumped,” he said.

“I walked around to see if anyone was there, but I couldn’t see anyone and I wasn’t going to leave them.”

A quick check-up at the vet showed the puppies, believed to be about eight weeks old and a staffy or border collie cross, to be healthy, although hungry.

As they were not micro-chipped, Mr MacIntosh, who also has two rescue dogs of his own, took the pups home and is yet to formally decide whether to keep them or re-home them.

He said his partner and four kids were enjoying the boisterous company of the young animals.

“For now we will look after them… we had to teach them to eat,” he said.

“These puppies are getting more love than you can imagine.”
