Academy training

BUDDING Swan Hill basketballers are benefiting from weekly training sessions on Monday nights at the stadium.

With the help of Basketball Victoria Country, local talent is being nurtured in every aspect from skill development to nutrition education.

Under 14s basketballers from Mildura, Echuca and Swan Hill attended a local skills day recently, where they were selected for the North West Regional Academy Program.

The program is run throughout country Victoria to identify and foster outstanding talent.

Led by head coach Sharon Denham, the Swan Hill group has been training on Monday nights since last month, with group and individual sessions running until August.

Two weekend camps will also be held for the athletes, with the best to play in the Golden Nugget Junior Development tournament featuring players from across the state.

The Golden Nugget tournament proceeds final selection for the teams for the Australian Country Junior Basketball Cup and the Southern Cross Challenge.

Local basketballers Henry Thompson, Isaiah Bull, Nyawi Moore, Angus Jones, Matty Gardner, Madison Curran, Amy Jobling, Lily Stacey, Xavier Bonney, Tanner Lewis, Remi Bennett and Bronte Ridley are all participating in the academy.
