Locals well represented at Swan Hill races

SWAN Hill’s racing industry will be well-represented at its marquee event this weekend. The Murray Downs Golf and Country Club Swan Hill June Races is one of only two three-day carnivals in Victoria, and local trainers are keen to impress.

Trainers Jane Duncan, Austy Coffey and Con Kelly, jockeys Harry Coffey and Jye McNeil, and owners Russell and Deryn Pinney are among the locals who will be hoping for success at the carnival.

Larriconi will be cheered on by local owners, with Harry Coffey aboard the first-starter for trainer dad Austy.

Harry Coffey has six rides across the weekend.

Race 2, the Only A Little Bit Over three-year-old maiden, will feature one local horse, while Darren Weir will also have two running.

“Everyone has runners. We’ll be well represented,” Austy Coffey said.

The prominent local trainer said he was looking forward to Larriconi’s run, while another locally-trained horse was also one to watch.

“Look out for Con Kelly’s Curragh King in the main race, it won in Bendigo last start,” he said.

The King is one to watch in the Murray Downs Swan Hill Cup, which jumps at 3.18pm.

Both the cup and the Pooles Accountants Golden Topaz will feature better fields than last year, Coffey reckons.

“It’ll be stronger fields in the Topaz and the cup. Last year it was surprising how light on they were,” he said.
