Kick back with Kye

A BEVERFORD 12-year-old is taking the Swan Hill airwaves by storm on his monthly radio program; ‘Kick back with Kye’.

Kye Belton has been joint hosting on Swan Hill’s community radio station 99.1 Smart FM after being introduced to the idea through his next-door-neighbour, Smart FM stalwart Wayne Harris.

“I just like talking about things and picking songs,” Kye said.”We’ve been talking about go-karts and soccer.”

Kye’s mum Loretta says the program is a great way for her son to express himself.

“It will give him confidence at public speaking,” she said.

“Going into the workforce, if Kye has this experience behind him it can only help.”

Kye’s goal is to host a show by himself and so he’s taking part in a three day Multicultural Arts Victoria and SYN Media training initiative next month, to be held at the Smart FM studio on Curlewis Street.

The workshop is open to budding announcers interested in radio presenting and producing, who are aged between 12 and 25, and those who come from a culturally diverse background.

Workshop coordinator Joelle Whiting encourages everyone to apply.

“Hopefully it will open up the radio,” she said,

“Having young people come in with maybe something different to say.,”

The workshop kicks off on Saturday, July 18 — to register your interest contact Joelle on 0433 764 263 or email joellewhiting@gmail.com.
