Strong turnout for annual event

A STRONG turnout ensured a successful Swan Hill Veterans’ Badminton Tournament at the weekend, with 24 eight-member teams taking to the courts for the two-day event.

Players from Ballarat, Camperdown, Traralgon (and the Latrobe Valley generally), Sale/Maffra, Albury, Charlton, Boort, Kerang, Mildura and Strathmerton, joined interstate sides from Adelaide and Deniliquin for the weekend.

Melbourne teams predominated, with eastern suburbs like Kilsyth and Greensborough represented by Mountain District association and Diamond Valley, while the Western Suburbs had Altona based players.

Swan Hill scored a rare win this weekend, when the Swan Hill Mixtures side topped C2 grade after a tough two days.

In their first match on Saturday, the Mixtures had no trouble disposing of Sale/Maffra Roulettes.

Nengah Sudiarsa and Rory Toyib were unstoppable, with both winning their six sets.

Robyn Kiel, Collin Devereux and Bruce McDowall only lost one set each in this first match.

The Mixtures had a much sterner challenge against Boort after lunch on Saturday.
