Marruk play sets out to find the silver lining

THE stories of Swan Hill youths are set to be told in the latest locally created performance from the Marruk Project.

Titled Light of Dawn, it is new ground for the usual performances put on by the group.

Described as “orchestrated spoken word with the use of multi-media”, it is a play developed from life experiences of the young people involved in its creation.

It will see live readings as well as pre-recorded monologues come together in a 45 minute play that will reveal the workings of the teenage mind.

“Anyone with a teenager will find it interesting to get into their mind and hear their thoughts and their fears,” theatre director Melodie Reynolds-Diarra said.

“There are times [when the kids were telling their story] where they thought perhaps the story wasn’t interesting, but there are little pearls of wisdom in there.”

About eight 13-to-21-year-old youths from the Yorta Yorta, Wemba Wemba and Wadi Wadi communities will perform in the play.

Marruk Project project manager Bebe Backhouse said themes that emerged in their discussions with the youths included feelings of boredom, a lack of jobs and a lack of future opportunities.
