Vic Country celebrates hat-trick

AFL Victoria Country celebrated a hat-trick of wins over the Victorian Amateur Football Association on Saturday.

Vic Country 1, 2 and Under 19s all claimed wins over the VAFA at Bendigo’s QEO.

The Under 19s enjoyed a comfortable win, 8.13 (61) to 1.6 (12). Balranald’s Cam Barrett played, booting a goal for Country.

Country 2’s game, the main one from a Swan Hill region perspective, featured Swan Hill’s Toby Thoolen and Kerang’s Ryan Gillingham.

Gillingham was among the better players as 2 got up 10.16 (76) to 7.5 (47) over VAFA.

He said the Country win was relatively comfortable after a tough opening.

“[The VAFA] jumped us at the start and were out by three goals but after that we got it together and dominated play,” he said yesterday.

“It was pretty wet and a bit scrappy.”

Country 1 defeated VAFA 17.15 (117) to 8.7 (55) in a one-sided game.

High-profile goal kicker Grant Weeks slammed home a game-high seven majors in Country’s easy win.

Former Moulamein and Swan Hill player Steve Stroobants kicked two goals for the Country outfit.
