Bush bashers roll into Moulamein

SPORTING and gardening equipment, as well as a pizza oven, are among the items that Moulamein Public School has picked up thanks to the 2015 Variety Bash.

The tour hit Moulamein on Monday, with about 100 teams of drivers descending on the small town in colourfully decorated vehicles from about 12.30pm.

Participants had driven down from Sydney in the days prior, and were preparing to head up to Mildura after visiting Moulamein.

The cars made for an unusual spectacle for the school’s students, who greeted the teams with cheers as they parked on the oval before the 300 or so participants had lunch at the school.

Principal Angela Sampson said the children’s fundraiser had raised about $10,000 for the school.

“It’s a great thing for our school,” she said.

Drivers Peter Mills and Jason Dymock, from Sydney, formed Team Outback.

They rolled into Moulamein after a drive of 250km, which was engaging but not varied enough for Mr Mills.

“It was great, but a bit boring because there was no dirt,” he laughed.

Organisers plan routes that take drivers off sealed roads where available and safe to do so.

“[Monday’s drive] was very flat, but you get used to it,” Mr Mills said.

Drivers were likely to get off the bitumen on their way to Mildura on Monday night, he said.
