Max’s young triumph

MAX Sammon became the youngest ever winner of an Overall Skeet Shooting State Title when he won the 50 Target New South Wales State Skeet Handicap Overall Championship last weekend.

Sammon competed at the championships held Wagga Wagga last weekend, in a field of over 100 shooters from all across Australia, Sammon held his nerve in the shoot off to win with a score of 134/137.

In second place was the current Australian champion Bendigo shooter Leigh Roberts.

Shooting the last 82 targets without a miss, Sammon — the youngest competitor at the championships — showed great determination and skill to outlast shooters with many more years of experience.

For his win, Sammon will have his name on the Coleman Aberley Perpetual Shield.

The win in the handicap was only part of a fantastic three-day carnival for Sammon. He also collected grade wins in the .410 bore championship and the doubles championship (where two targets are released simultaneously), and a second place in the 28 gauge championship.

During these events, Sammon set new personal bests shooting perfect 25/25 rounds in both the 28 gauge and .410 bore.

Capping off the carnival, Sammon also won the B Grade High Gun by a huge margin of 12 targets.

Sammon was presented with his High Gun sash by visiting five-time world champion from the United States, John Shima.

Shima said he was impressed with Sammon’s performance.

“To see Max shoot so well at his age is just wonderful,” he said.

Max’s next competition is the Queensland State Titles to be held in Townsville from September 17-20.
