The artistic astronomer

AS the owner and operator of Lake Boga’s very own observatory, John Fowler is well-known around town as the star man.

But, his other title is just as catchy — the glass man.

Mr Fowler has been a glass artist for two decades, after making the switch from a 30 year career as head of lighting at Channel Nine.

But, according to Mr Fowler, it was a logical shift.

“Glass and light work together,” he explains.

“Glass behaves differently in different light.”

Delicate dishes, vases and bowls line the walls of his workshop, but Mr Fowler says the way he best likes to work with glass is a little less traditional.

“I get a lot of satisfaction out of experimenting, especially when it turns out unexpected,” he says.

His experiments have seen old louvre windows used for their glass, ceiling roses used for moulds and lots of trial and error projects.

Because, as Mr Fowler says, you never know what will happen in the kiln.

“Somebody may like it,” he shrugs.

“You can do some marvellous things with glass.”
