Grand theft excavation

POLICE are on the hunt for the brazen thieves who made off with $115,000 of machinery from a Curlewis Street business yesterday morning.

At about 3am, offenders cut the lock on the front gate of William Adams CAT dealership before loading a skid-steer and a tractor onto the back of another heavy vehicle and fleeing the scene.

Detective Senior Constable Gerard Kelly is in charge of the investigation and calling on anyone who may have been in the area at the time to contact police.

“It is believed that an unknown offender or offenders… have cut the lock on the front gate, they’ve then accessed a CAT brand yellow and black skid-steer, and a green Deutz Fahr front-loader tractor,” he said.

“It is believed they have loaded them on to a heavy vehicle before making their escape.”

Jasen Gerrard, branch manager at Williams Adams, said both machines were brand new.

“It’s brand new equipment… they’ve come in, cut the chain, loaded up and drove out,” he said.

He believes to be the thieves to be professionals, and that the machinery has not been stashed somewhere in town, rather it has moved on.

“We’re on a highway here… they’ve come back and closed the gates and put another padlock on, it’s all pretty fair dinkum,” he said.
