Bacon still popular

SWAN Hill butchers say processed meat sales have remained steady despite renewed warnings about their alleged cancer risk.

Last Monday, the World Health Organisation’s cancer agency, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), released their evaluation of the links between eating processed meats — such as bacon, sausages and cured meats — and cancer.

Despite this it seems Swan Hill locals are still happy consuming processed meats, with all butchers contacted by The Guardian saying there had been no noticeable dip in sales over the past week.

In fact, customers were happier seeing the lighter side of the greasy news.

“Some customers have commented on it, but there’s been no difference to sales,” Sharon Cheeseman, of home-made bacon specialist Willhome Farm Fresh Meats, said.

“[Sales] are going good. It hasn’t changed, no one’s stopped because of the news that it’s bad for you,” said Doey’s Meats’ Brodie Langerak.

“We’ve had a few people crack jokes about it but everyone loves bacon so they’re not going to change.”
