SWAN Hill’s collision repairers have noticed an increase in business after the revamping of the McCallum and Campbell street intersection.
The recently installed traffic lights appear to be working well on the most part but some confusion is still evident according to local panel beaters.
All three collision repair services agree that stopping in the middle of Campbell Street seems to be causing the most issues followed by cars reversing from the parking in McCallum Street outside the ANZ Bank.
Another issue appears to be around lane layout, again where McCallum Street turns into Campbell Street. There is what appears to be a bicycle lane that is not marked and is leaving some drivers confused about how to make a left hand turn.
Viv Simmonds from Swan Hill Windscreens Collision Repair Centre noted there had been several near misses as drivers adapt to the changed traffic conditions.
“Backing out from the old post office corner seems to be a common problem. Vehicles are backing straight out into oncoming traffic since the road layout has changed,” he said.
Ray Taylor owns and operates Sun Centre Auto Panels and noted a sharp increase in towing jobs from the new intersection but attributes it to the confusion that was occurring while road works were still taking place.
“In the past we would be lucky to tow one car a year from that intersection, this year we have already towed six,” he said.
