Snake danger high

CONCERNS have been raised for children’s safety at Tower Hill after a deadly snake was spotted near a popular play area last week.

A Facebook group dedicated to snake sightings in Swan Hill had a report from local snake catcher Michael O’Brien warning about a call he had received about a venomous Eastern brown.

It’s believed to be the second time the snake has made an appearance and, according to Mr O’Brien, children were attempting to play with it.

Ultima snake catcher Greg Keyes, who also services Swan Hill, said the Tower Hill reserve was an ideal location for snakes due to its water catching gullies, reed grasses and rocks. But he said it was worth noting snakes were appearing all over the region.

“It’s a busy season already,” Mr Keyes said.

“It was a good breeding season for snakes so we have been receiving frequent calls already.

“I would say that I have already removed 16 snakes from across the region this year.”
