A-Lister performance

TAKING to the field in A Grade can be a daunting task for even the oldest heads but one 17-year-old has grabbed the bat with both hands in his first full-time season in the Swan Hill and District Association.

Nyah District batsman Jacob Lister had his breakout moment on the second day of his side’s defeat of Woorinen when he smashed 60 runs.

The talented youngster lasted the distance and never marched back to the pavilion, causing headaches for the opposition’s bowling.

The Balranald junior made the jump to Nyah this year and has learnt a lot about himself and the game.

“It has been real good … the blokes are friendly and have welcomed me into the club,” he said.

“It has been a great experience and when I was told I would be batting at number three, I was a bit shocked.

“But I have loved it. Getting in early to face the new ball and trying my best for the team.”

Lister took on a strong bowling performance from Woorinen on the first day of their clash before opening up on the second day on Saturday.

The high school student said he was given words of encouragement out in the middle.

“[My teammates] are all pretty friendly and when I was out there they kept telling me to be patient and to wait for the bad ball,” he told The Guardian.

“It was a bit surreal [scoring 60 runs] to be honest. I never thought I would make as many runs as I did in my first year and it shows I can bat at the highest level.

“I have enjoyed it, it is really good. The other guys teach me a lot in the nets and I work hard to correct myself at training.

“We are feeling confident about the season. We are a young side but we are excited for our future and for the rest of the year.”
