Household waste adds up

EACH household in the Swan Hill municipality generates about one tonne of waste a year, according to a new waste management strategy.

Swan Hill Rural City Council formally adopted a Draft Waste Management Strategy for the next five years at its November business meeting on Tuesday.

Building on the previous strategy (for 2007 to 2012), the new strategy was informed by an analysis of municipal waste data for all the 8316 households covered by council-run collection services.

According to that data, 4750 tonnes of garbage, 1840 tonnes of recyclables and 210 tonnes of garden organic waste were collected through kerbside services in 2013/14, the latest year of collected data.

It was estimated that each person across the municipality generated around 330 kg of waste and 70 kg of recycling, a total generation of 400 kg per person per year or one tonne per household per year.

SHRCC engineering projects and assets manager, Mazen Aldaghstani, said one of the main priorities when developing the strategy was ensuring it was tailored specifically for the municipality’s needs.

“With this in mind, the new strategy has been developed to link with council’s financial plan, the latest EPA regulations and levy structure, and in line with current waste management contracts expiry dates,” he said.
