Swan Hill’s traffic blacklist

THE ladies who staff the Swan Hill Comfort Centre are located right beside the Beveridge Street and McCallum Street roundabout and, from their front-row viewpoint, they witness several near-misses everyday.

“One of the biggest problems at this intersection is vehicles leaving the Caltex Service station and turning the wrong way resulting in the car travelling into oncoming traffic,” said the comfort centre’s Yvonne Parish.

“With the roundabout located so close, the cars going the wrong way enter the roundabout and create havoc.”

Like most of her fellow staff members, Ms Parish has strong views about the proposal of establishing another service station at the intersection.

She said the intersection was already congested enough as it was and speed, along with driver error and lack of care, were causing a high incidence rate there.

“As an elderly citizen myself, I am always nervous as to whether I am going to make the crossing safely,” she said.

Just last Thursday, a 74-year-old man caused a six-car collision near the intersection when he mistook his accelerator for his break.

However, this wasn’t the only traffic black spot residents raise to The Guardian as a concern, with the intersection between Gray and Campbell streets also highlighted by several different people.
