Outside the box

IT’S official, December is here and it’s time to put up the Christmas tree without fear of superstitious consequences. But before you dust off the tinsel and spend hours untangling the lights keep SuniTAFE’s pallet Christmas trees in mind.

The pallet Christmas tree idea is an initiative of the Certificate 1 Work Education students who have been working with teacher Tracey Wareham to design, construct and distribute unique wooden trees ideal for home or garden.

“The pallet idea is a concept that promotes recycling and sustainability,” Ms Wareham said.

“Our students have enjoyed creating them and have shown individual strengths in the different aspects of their creation.”

The trees are made from old donated pallets which the students cut, erect into a rustic style Christmas tree and then spray paint. The trees are suitable for indoor or outdoor use and come ready for buyers to stamp their own design on by decorating.

“They look amazing with fairy lights draped around them,” Ms Wareham told The Guardian.

“But what is really fantastic is the skills the students are learning in the process of making them.

“The students have complete input from design to distribution and have learnt valuable life skills such as work safe practices.
