Cops hit the beat

SWAN Hill police have increased their presence on the streets during the festive season to curb a rising incidence of shop theft.

So far in December Swan Hill police has observed an increase in shoplifting offences from the same period last year.

All general duties officers will be hitting the beat in the CBD, performing foot patrols during the Christmas shopping period.

Swan Hill Crime Prevention Unit’s Tania Peters said while police were trying to do their bit to stop holiday crime, community members could help out as well by being extra vigilant.

“This is a busy time of year for all, please remember a couple of personal security tips to ensure your festive season is not tarnished by crime,” she said.

“Be vigilant with handbag and wallet security, don’t leave them unattended even for a short period of time. Ensure that your vehicle is secure and you do not leave valuables on display in the vehicle.

“Shop keepers need to be particularly mindful at this time of year with shop steal on the increase. Customer service is one of the most effective crime prevention strategies.

“Staff need to ensure that personal belongings are kept secure, we have had instances of theft reported by staff when a member of the public has accessed office areas or unattended desks.”

Anyone with questions or concerns can contact Senior Constable Peters by calling Swan Hill Police Station on 5036 1600.

Information relating to crime can also be reported anonymously to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
