Woorinen thump Ultima TUF

WOORINEN have all but ended Ultima TUF’s season after a resounding five wicket win in the Swan Hill and District Cricket Association’s first round of matches since late last year.

Ultima TUF set their opponents a total of 81 after a slow start that saw their two opening batsmen Ryan Callaghan and Kaine O’Connell walking back to the pavilion with just two runs between them.

Making it hard for themselves, the home side never dug their heels in as Woorinen ripped through the list, bowling them all out after 34 overs.

With the ball in hand, the day didn’t get much better for Ultima TUF as Woorinen slowly chipped away at the total needed. Opening batsman Jake Schmidt started their innings on the right foot with 22 runs before being caught out.

The top order for Woorinen all fired as they cruised to the total in just 24 overs, losing just five wickets in the process.

After the match, Woorinen captain Glenn Violi said the side played one of their best performances of the season.

“It was really good, it was our best performance of the [season] I would say,” he said.

“We bowled and fielded well all day and we went about the chase early, it was good … we wanted early wickets, it makes it easier to chase so it was good to set us up.

“We have a pretty strong line-up and have a couple guys back in. Hopefully we can win again next week and go into another week on the right track.

“We are right back into it if we keep winning.”

Ultima TUF president Kyle Symons said his side didn’t reach its potential.

“We didn’t have enough runs on the board really, and we dropped a few catches in the field as well … we are pretty disappointed,” he told The Guardian.

“Batting is still our big thing, if we have an extra 70 runs on the board it would be different.

“It was good bowling by them and a bit of poor shot choice for us.”

Over at Ken Harrison Reserve, St Mary’s Tyntynder edged out a spirited Nyah District in a showdown.

Heading into the middle, St Mary’s Tyntynder needed to find 157 runs for victory, finally hitting the 158 run mark after 38.3 overs.

And Swan Hill have continued their good form with a final over thriller with RSL.

After setting a total of 150, Swan Hill bowled RSL all out for 142 with just four balls remaining.
