POLICE are investigating the scene of an early morning high speed crash on the Murray Valley Highway which left five people in hospital this week.
The Guardian understands two of the five men involved may be in the country illegally, with police confirming that the immigration status of the driver is “strongly in question”.
The accident, believed to be speed related, occurred just after 6am on Monday when a Ford Fairmont Ghia travelling south blew a tyre, veering off the highway near Tyntynder Road and crashing into a ditch.
The 36-year-old driver, a Malaysian national, was taken to Swan Hill District Health after the accident but was discharged soon after with minor injuries.
He has since has been arrested and charged with dangerous driving causing serious injury.
Two male passengers in their 30s were flown to the Royal Melbourne Hospital on Monday with serious injuries.
The other two men were admitted to Swan Hill District Health with varying degrees of injury, with one of the two since transferred out of Swan Hill.
