Balls and all

AT the time of print, the rivalry between Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer was undetermined, but should he win, the team at Get Behind the Mallee Djoker have been hard at work to ensure the campaign gets as much publicity as possible.

“We need to be prepared, if he comes to visit it’ll be Monday I reckon,” president of the Swan Hill Lawn Tennis Club Peter Morrison said.

A signwriter has begun painting a mural of Swan Hill’s adopted mayor at the tennis club with completion due sometime today.

There was a videographer present taking a timelapse video to show Djokovic’s team, in hopes that if the star does win, he will be attending the celebrations here in Swan Hill.

Committee members also took tennis balls out to the Australia Day Breakfast, getting locals to sign them with messages of good luck, which will arrive in Melbourne today.

Another aspect of the campaign has seen a take-up of local businesses postering their walls with Djokovic related specials, posting them on social media with the Get Behind the Mallee Djoker’s 10,000 strong reach.

“We’ve got all these posters … we’ve got the businesses on board,” committee member Teesha Jonkers said.

“It’s not costing them anything and it’s reaching the people.”

Alongside the postering campaign there’s the ‘Things Novak can do in Swan Hill’ including the 10 Steps and visit the Lake Boga Catalina Flying Boat Museum, and the ‘Recreate Novak’s Backhand’ competition, which operates similarly to the ice-bucket challenge, nominating friends to strike their best backhand pose, and post it online.

For more information on how to get a poster, or to share and get Djokovic to Swan Hill, jump on the Get Behind the Mallee Djoker Facebook page.
