Laneway link uncovered

UNDERNEATH the paint of one of Swan Hill’s small laneways lies a link to one of Melbourne’s most iconic jewellers.

Next to Clarks Homeware an old sign used to read: ‘Kozminsky & Co, General Merchants. Bonded and Free Stores Have On Sale. Direct Importers’.

The faded, barely legible sign was rendered around 10 years ago, erasing a historic connection to Melbourne’s 155-year-old Kozminsky Jeweller.

Little is known about the elusive Jewish immigrant Simon Kozminsky who established the jewellery store.

It was first located on the corner of Bourke and Elizabeth Streets and later moved to the Block Arcade.

Angelo Acornero from Kozminsky Melbourne told The Guardian numerous members of the Kozminsky family came out to Australia, including Marks Kozminsky who went on to operate the Swan Hill store.
