Rare skills celebrated at Speewa

SPEEWA Heritage Club have joined forces with a host of talented locals for the launch of the inaugural Rare Skills Day which will take place on Sunday.

The event aims to showcase some of the rare skills that locals possess, at a time when many of those skills are fading with time as technology advances.

With up-cycling, and retro back in fashion, the day should have something to suit everyone’s interests according to coordinator Warren Doherty.

“It’s important to acknowledge the rare skills but also teach future generations about them,” Mr Doherty said.

“We have a host of younger people who have never seen some of the skills our community members have.

“For example, we have kids that have never knitted or made something from scratch.

“The rare skills day is about ensuring that these skills are not entirely lost into the future,” Mr Doherty said.

The event will showcase a variety of talents and skills with demonstrations taking place throughout the day.
