TWO Malaysian nationals reportedly living in the country illegally have been detained by the Immigration Department after they were involved in a car accident on the Murray Valley Highway.
The pair were apprehended by Swan Hill Police after their car rolled over near Natya, around 50km north of Swan Hill, at about 4.30pm on Sunday, while travelling south down the highway.
The car ran off the road and down a two-metre embankment before rolling several times, coming to a rest on its roof.
Swan Hill Local Area Commander Inspector Dan Davison said the male driver and female passenger were initially treated at the scene by paramedics and the woman was later taken to Swan Hill District Health to be treated for minor injuries.
She was released from hospital and the pair remained in custody at the Swan Hill Police Station due to concerns over their visas, before Immigration Department officials arrived to assess them.
The Guardian confirmed with The Department of Immigration and Border Protection the pair were detained under the Migration Act and transferred to a detention facility at an unspecified location.
