LOCAL MP Peter Walsh’s chief of staff has nominated for the region’s Upper House seat, after Damian Drum vacated it to contest the upcoming federal election.
With the recently-announced retirement of sitting Liberal MP Sharman Stone, the Nationals have been able to contest the federal seat of Murray for the first time in 20 years due to an agreement not to contest a seat held by their Coalition partners.
Mr Drum, who has stood as the Nationals’ Upper House member for Northern Victoria Region since 2002, was this week endorsed by the federal Nationals to be their candidate for Murray, which covers an area from Boort to Shepparton.
Mr Walsh’s chief of staff since 2010, Luke O’Sullivan has put his name up for the Upper House seat being vacated by Mr Drum.
Mr O’Sullivan, 44, said he had a strong connection with Northern Victoria, having grown up on a farm in Patchewollock — which he continues to farm with his brother using contractors.
