May Carnival a hit despite rain

THE May Carnival has got off to a mixed start with one full day of competition, followed by washed out events on Sunday afternoon.

With the men’s and ladies fours getting off to a flying start the Swan Bowls Club on Saturday, it was the mixed fours that suffered with early morning rainfall deemed too much for the greens.

The contingent of bowlers will now have the chance to explore the town, and May Carnival secretary Bill King said the tournament was, so far, an exciting time for the bowling community.

“The atmosphere has been very good, we have about 220 people who played on Saturday, they all very much enjoyed themselves and they had a wonderful day,” he said.

“The first event was a good chance for the teams to meet and mingle, it was an excellent chance.

“The comers will begin arriving tomorrow, and most of the returners have come back and were out on the weekend.”

While disappointed the competition was washed out on Sunday, King said the players would respect the decision.

“It is a bit disappointing, the players said we made the right decision to call it off and they will be out and about exploring to see what shops are open,” he told The Guardian.

“I am very excited to go forward as long as the weather comes good … the highlight will be our 50th anniversary dinner, that is officially booked out and that is excellent.”

The group also got stuck into a social dinner on Saturday night, kicking off the 2016 May Carnival.
