On top of the world

THE entire districts of Nyah and Nyah West are brimming with pride after their senior football side continued their undefeated run by stunning four-time reigning premiers Kerang in front of a home crowd on Saturday.

Nyah Nyah West United beat the Blues by 29 points to record their first victory over the Gannawarra Shire side since July 2010 — when they came back from four goals behind in the first quarter to beat them by two points.

That year, the Blues went on to win the Central Murray Football Netball League (CMFNL) premiership, while the Demons languished in eighth place.

Since then, the Blues — who have won the last four premierships, losing just four home-and-away matches throughout that period — have been unforgiving against the Dees, winning their next nine match-ups by an average margin of 12 goals.

But on the weekend the new-look Dees outfit put on a clinic to win their fourth straight match and deal the Blues’ first loss of 2016, with an inspirational 10-goal third term setting the boys in blue and red up for a memorable victory after managing only two goals to half time.

The win continued a successful start to the year for Nyah district’s sports clubs, with its two bowls sides and junior and senior tennis teams all winning their respective pennants in the past summer.

Club secretary Vicki Allen said it was too early for the club to get too excited about its premiership credentials, but the win certainly acted as a morale boost for the players.

“Nobody wants to celebrate too early because it’s only May, but we’re very pleased where we are,” she said.

“The confidence in the players is certainly up, we’ve hit a bit of depth with our reserves being undefeated as well.
