Wooden bird one-of-a-kind

AN inventive all-wood design secured first prize at a national woodworking competition for a Swan Hill craftsman.

Newton Williams was awarded the honour for his 386-piece wooden hummingbird at the recent Australian Scroll Saw Network Championships, held in Coonabarabran.

But Mr Williams said the judges were initially in disbelief that it was his own handiwork.

“The judges thought I’d made a kit,” he said with a laugh.

Mr Williams said the wooden bird, known as Colibri, took about two months to construct from start to finish after he was alerted to the design online by a fellow scroll saw enthusiast last year.
