A LOCAL careers advisor has called on the party that forms government after tomorrow’s Federal Election to consider reviewing incentive payments for trade employers.
This comes after Fairfax Media reported this week apprenticeship numbers were down across the country, a trend reflected in the Swan Hill district.
But Murray Mallee Training chief executive officer Geoff Carson believed apprenticeship numbers in Swan Hill, while lower than normal, had not fallen to critical levels — although employers still could use some incentive to hire apprentices.
“The only people who can create apprenticeships are employers,” he said.
“Incentives available for employers haven’t changed in dollar value for a number of years.”
He said the past few years had been quiet as the drought cut into employers’ ability to employ apprentices but noted there was “no real cause for alarm”.
