NAIDOC week begins

SWAN Hill’s NAIDOC committee have organised a host of activities in celebration of NAIDOC week, which kicks off today.

NAIDOC stands for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee, and its origins are traced back as early as the 1920s.

This year’s theme is The Living Narrative of Our Nation.

The week-long event will start with a flag raising ceremony at 9.45am.

NAIDOC committee member Claire Matheson said they were hoping all community members would attend.

“We are really hoping to draw a strong crowd this year,” she said.

“NAIDOC week is a chance to celebrate Aboriginal and Islander history, culture, achievements and contribution to Australia

“But it’s something for everyone to get involved in, we want to welcome everyone to our week of activities and celebration.”
