Little Murray Weir downsizepositive: water body

WORK continues on the Little Murray River Weir as part of Goulburn-Murray Water’s (GMW) Swan Hill Modernisation Project.

The project, started in May 2015, aims to secure ongoing water access for landholders who rely on supply from the river.

Despite rumours that the weir was being completely removed, GMW assured locals this was not the case.

GMW Connections Project manager Darren Nabbs said works at the weir would reduce the height by approximately two metres.

“The benefit of lowering the weir, as well as opening Fish Point Weir at the upper end, will be that the Little Murray River will return to a natural regime,” he said.

“This work will benefit the health of the river by improving overall water quality and river bank vegetation.

“It will also extend the life of the weir a further 25 to 30 years.”
