SWAN Hill’s Tessa Lavey has been added to the Chances Champion honour board.
The 23-year-old Perth Lynx captain last week received her ticket to Rio after being announced as part of the Australian Opals Basketball squad for next month’s Olympics.
But, it was a chance given to the point guard at the age of 10 that has helped shape the talented athlete who has achieved much in her young sporting career.
The Mallee-based Chances for Children organisation sponsored Lavey’s participation in the Australian All Schools Cross Country on the Sunshine Coast in August 2003.
Chances for Children was established in 2001 in partnership with Mallee Family Care and the then three water authorities.
It aimed to remove financial barriers for children and young people in the Mallee in a bid to help them achieve their potential.
At the cross country event Lavey finished third in the individual title and first in the team entry.
