Moulamein snap losing streak

ONE of Australia’s longest losing streaks is officially over after Moulamein stunned Quambatook at the weekend to record their first win since beating Murrabit in round 13, 2014 — 32 games ago.

The dreaded streak wasn’t far behind the 51 losses the VFL/AFL’s 1912-14 University team amassed, not too far off the NSWRL/NRL’s 1934-36 Sydney University team’s streak of 42 defeats and even beat the New Zealand Knight’s streak of 11 consecutive L’s in the A-League.

As far as sporting folklore goes, the streak was up there.

The whipping boys finally had enough and snatched the whip back from Quambatook in emphatic fashion, thumping them to the tune of 54 points.

The 11.19.85 to 4.7.31 was a remarkable turnaround from the loss Quambatook handed the Swans earlier in the year, by a narrow 13 points back in round six.

Moulamein coach Tony Mudge said the win was a good feeling, but a far cry from where they wanted to be in 2016.

“It was a pleasing feeling to get the win, it has been a long time coming,” he said. “For a lot of young local blokes they have played nearly 40 matches without winning a game.

“The supporters were good and loud. I am proud of everyone and the team for standing up, it is still only one win for the season and that isn’t where we want to be.

“We have got nearly everyone recommitted for next year, only a couple more blokes are to re-sign. We will then look for key position players, a ruckman, key forward and some on ballers…plus the second year of our new game plan will help. It was a pleasing win for the blokes who do so much around the club and make it turn, we want to make it enjoyable again.”

While Quambatook aren’t in the best form themselves, the win may not be enough to drag Moulamein from another wooden spoon, but it does represent optimism going forward.

Moulamein will now face defending premiers Ultima on Saturday away from home in a bid to keep the momentum going.
