Demons turning it around

PLAYING for a club with a losing culture can be hard, but when it all turns around and you start getting best on ground honours suddenly playing football can become so much more exciting.

Player of the Year nomination Jaydyn Borchard, 18, has put all the hard work in over his years as a junior for the Nyah Nyah West United Demons, and the talented halfback is now giving back to his club in matches.

His second best on ground performance came at the weekend during his side’s thrashing of Balranald, an honour in a side full to the brim with talented ex-AFL players.

Playing through the ranks, a 16-year-old Borchard debuted for the club three years ago, but nothing could prepare the youngster for the success in season 2016.

“I am happy about the year, I have been playing here my whole life and it has been a long time since success, through the juniors we just got smashed and couldn’t get the numbers,” Borchard admitted.

“But the club has brought in a fair few players…I have been getting a lot more confidence with [teammates] Ash Thompson and Matty Curran always talking to me and giving me tips…it helped me grow as a player.”

With a host of new recruits in their side, Borchard admitted he was a little disappointed but it was just where country football had got to without a salary cap.

“You need to (buy players) to be successful. But I am not worried about all that,” he said. I will just keeping putting my head down playing footy.”
