RESIDENTS from Tooleybuc and surrounding areas have been reassured services across the Murray River Council area will not be cut due to the vast distances that needed to be travelled to reach other communities.
The continuation of service provision in small towns was one of the main concerns brought to the attention of the council’s administrator David Shaw and interim general manager Margot Stork when they visited Tooleybuc to consult with community members on Monday night.
Nineteen ratepayers, most of whom hailed from Tooleybuc and Goodnight, attended the community consultation session – one of two held earlier this week, with the other taking place in Barham on Tuesday night.
In raising concerns about potential cuts to community services as a result of the recent merger, one audience member used the example of the Goodnight landfill.
“It’s not used very often — it probably only gets one customer a week – but we need it here because otherwise we’d have to travel 60km to access the next one,” he said.
