Karen Wood still calls Swan Hill home

Success can be measured in different ways but when it comes to business success, Karen Wood reached the pinnacle.

In a career that took her to the top of one of Australia’s blue chip companies, Ms Wood stood proudly as the only woman on the board of multinational mining giant BHP Billiton.

Ms Wood was born and raised in Swan Hill and returns often to visit her mother who still resides in the region.

She completed her schooling at Swan Hill High School and initially enrolled in a Bachelor of Education.

“At the time I was always clear I wanted to study but I just wasn’t sure exactly what,” Ms Wood said.

“My siblings and I were very lucky as our parents placed a high priority on education and all of us were encouraged and expected to attend university.”

After completing the education degree, Ms Wood went back to university and completed a law degree.
