The captain of the Swan Hill Fire Brigade has urged the district’s residents to check their smoke alarms after three homes were gutted by fire in the past month.
Dennis Turner said two of the homes were not fitted with working smoke detectors.
“There are thousands of preventable house fires in Victoria each year,” he said.
“Most of these house fires are caused by someone making a mistake — a moment of carelessness, forgetfulness or neglect,” he said.
