A contingent of 25 Swan Hill Vietnam veterans made their way to Melbourne to take part in a service commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan yesterday.
Vietnam veterans commemorated the battle with services and events scheduled around the country and, despite controversial last minute opposition from the Vietnamese government, at the battle site.
President of the Vietnam Veterans Association in Swan Hill Harold Heslop was one of the 5000 people who attended a service at Melbourne’s Shrine of Remembrance to commemorate Australia’s worst loss of life in a single day during the war.
