A recovering ice addict has made fresh calls for a drug rehabilitation and detoxification centre to be set up in Swan Hill.
Shannon Ellis, who is recovering from a 10-year methamphetamine addiction, said there was not enough support available to help people in the district recover from addictions to illicit drugs.
Currently there are only two beds available for drug rehabilitation in north-west Victoria, at the Mildura Base Hospital, while Swan Hill’s nearest residential rehabilitation facility is almost 200km away in Bendigo.
“I would hate for the younger generation to receive limited help if they went through a similar situation, especially my kids to go through that,” Ms Ellis said.
“It needs to be stopped because you would be surprised by what happens behind closed doors — violence and kidnappings, it’s horrible.”
